Given annually in recognition of distinguished service in the field of nutrition by a Canadian. The McHenry acknowledges David's contribution in advancing the nutritional health of infants worldwide.

David's career in nutrition has been unique. Under the aegis of his employer, the H.J.Heinz Company, he has contributed significantly to nutrition education and public health nutrition in Canada and internationally.

In 1986, David furthered his public health goals by establishing the Heinz Institute of Nutritional Sciences, a non-profit organization with a mission to "Advance the knowledge and practice of nutrition with the goal of ensuring the nutritional well being of emerging generations." Starting first in China, where it organized symposia and forums for the study and debate of nutrition issues, HINS programs are now active in 14 countries including Thailand, Russia, India, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

David has published over 60 articles in refereed journals as well as the monograph Infant Nutrition - A Study of Feeding Practices from Birth to 18 months, and is editor of Essays on Pediatric Nutrition. He has written numerous articles on nutrition for consumers, and recently revised the Heinz Handbook of Nutrition which is used as a reference by medical practitioners and as a nutrition text for medical students in many universities in the U.S. David is also senior author of Starting Right, a popular publication on infant feeding targeted at new parents, published in partnership with the Canadian Pediatric Society

The E W. McHenry Award was established in 1974 by Canada Packers Ltd. a Canadian Food Processor in memory of Earl Willard McHenry, the first Head of The University of Toronto's Department of Public Health Nutrition.
